Back to the Fracture Clinic..

Today, it was  my monthly visit to the Fracture Clinic at the local hospital. Upon my arrival, usually  my leg is X rayed and then I wait to see a consultant. Last time we went there we heard the news that the metal frame was likely to be on until Xmas, possibly later. I was hoping the X ray would show that the callus, which is a bit like what you get when you weld two bits of metal together would show a bit more progress. On the way into the hospital, we met a lady with a  similar cage on, she had hers on for fifteen months, but her break was really bad. There was a load of gazebo’s by the entrance to the hospital, they were cooking food like burgers for the NHS staff, these were free, not sure how it’s funded, I am sure the staff would prefer a big wage, but it’s a nice gesture I thought.

I asked about the phantom  infection in the leg which wasn’t an infection after all. The bump is still there on my leg, but it’s nothing to worry about. As I had only just had an X ray taken for the phantom infection, that part of my out patients visit was not needed. I saw a different consultant and we talked about the so called infection, he took a look and said it was still ok. He said my break was quite bad, and in the UK I might have had a cage anyway. He said the callus is coming along nicely. He was a bit more forthcoming in timelines, when I go in mid January, he is hoping it will be ready, they then loosen  the cage and then see how I get on, if all is ok, two weeks later it comes off. So in time for my birthday. I should be able  to drive then! But if inexplicably the callus growth slows, then it could be March, but it’s up to me to go back to doing my roadside walks, as putting weight on the leg, does stimulate growth of the callus. I have two more monthly checkups in November and December.

Last night, I did not hear my lodger coming in to the house, he had his dinner, and everything washed up. Today  he started at six and finished after I left for the hospital. We will meet the Refugee Coordinator from the local council later today,  it’s like a sort of day one meeting, with us all, even though the lodger has been here a couple of days.

When we got back to our road, from  the hospital, my neighbour invited me in for a coffee, after which I walked to our house, the floors have been hoovered and my lodger was then mopping the floors. Very kind of him. He told me that he enjoyed the meal I left out for him last night, and we are having a steak and salad for dinner tonight, cooked by him.
