The troublesome cake

After the frenetic activity from last week, responding to kind requests from local residents to kit out my lodgers flat, it’s been a bit quieter. I did some work on the TRHA garden on the Sunday, pruning back the blackberries and starting the tidying there. I also finished cementing the stones around the pond, I bought some new plants too. To finish it off I bought a ton bag of larger stones than the pea shingle currently there, which looks better. 

We are waiting for the final sign off for the flat my lodger and family will move into, it’s not being helped by the fact the liaison officer at the council is now on holiday, his coworker is meant to be helping, but he has his own work to do I guess. They may be here for another week. I have also weeded the back garden, trying to get rid of weeds like dandelion, ground elder and buttercups. 

I have formalised the next version of the TRHA web page, it’s just needs to be approved by the chairman, I am already looking into the version after that and got ChatGPT to write some code to make a news web page that displays the contents of files with news in a specified directory, also displaying an image if one is there with the same name. It works well. Currently we have to edit a news html page, which requires some knowledge of html, not ideal.

I have been cake making, using my two pound loaf tin for two lemon drizzle cakes and another go at that troublesome  beetroot and chocolate cake, I used a lower temperature so the top is not so dramatic.


My friend from Singapore is coming over in May, with his son, we are going to do a tour of the Houses of Parliament and go to the Imperial War Museum. There is a museum called the depot, which has London Transport memorabilia in it, unfortunately it’s only open three times a year, but not when my friends are here. I have booked to go in April. I have started looking at a new app on the tv, called UKtv, I watched the Marlow murders mystery, which was like Midsomer murders in Marlow. Light viewing! 

I am still going to the gym, I have started winding up the levels on the bike and doing a few more of the other exercises. In the Cosy Nook today, a guy I know who had a leg injury heard me talking about this sensation I get near my ankle, as if I had one of those old fashioned leg irons on! He said he had the same sensation! 

I am going out a few times a week, to leave the family on their own for dinner, in fact some of those occasions I have been treated to super meals at friends. One day a week, I have fish and chips, but not wrapped in newspaper unfortunately! I fancy a trip to Henley this weekend, to go to my favourite pub there. Sunday night is usually curry night, but last Sunday it was throwing it down, so I stayed home and had the remains of a cottage pie from the other day. I ought to go out on the cycle again soon.

It is the last day of looking after the Cocker Spaniel who lives in the house where  one called Neville used to live. As time goes on the two Spaniels are converging, there are some subtle differences, the  youngster is becoming less black on his back. The youngster is very vocal, he talks non stop. Ignoring him increases the volume of the chatter until you involve him in some way. He loves doing things, non stop, action all day is the name of the game. He loves water, but he won’t swim. It’s been hot, so the walks I have done I have tried to ensure he had the opportunity to cool down. A walk from Aston to Henley, along the river Thames. Pub visit at the Angel on the Bridge. He loved that of course. Another day, another walk. This time around the pub at Waltham St Lawrence, another favourite pub, but we did the walk too early for opening time. A few days off in the sun

Like many tourists of yesteryear I have just got back from a holiday in North Wales, based in Colwyn Bay where my brother in law now lives. I have stayed there before but many years ago. He was down in our neck of the woods, so I hitched a lift in his MX-5 car to save me using the train or driving. The weather was still nice up there, just a little cooler, with a sea breeze thrown in for good measure. In the evening after we got up there, as  Monday is a quiet night, we had a few drinks in a local bar, where they have a reciprocal arrangement with a local pizza place, you order at the bar, they get delivered to you and you eat them with your beer. Result. All are priced the same. I had Peking Duck ( amazing ), he had Smoked Haddock ( also amazing ). The bar does all sorts of things like film nights, to tempt to punters in. Remembering two tragedies

After breakfast in my room, I had a leisurely start and left Penzance by foot to Mousehole, not pronounced as it is spelt. I walked through the town, heading to nearby Newlyn, which is a proper fishing village. Along the route was a lovely wide promenade and a Lido, cleverly designed to withstand the force of the sea and heated from a geo thermal spring. It’s called Jubilee Pool because it was built to celebrate George V’s Jubilee in 1935. There was a nice old art deco pub opposite, sadly with the parked cars it was not easy to see its full design. Along the prom, lots of people were walking, and many of them had black Labradors, which was nice as it got me thinking about the one I know who now lives in Oxfordshire, they contacted me today, I might see them next weekend.
