A room with a view
After a long and tiring journey to Greece I got to the island of Sifnos. Long and tiring, because I had to take the last flight to Athens, arrival time one am local time. We had a medical emergency on board, with the familiar, is there a doctor onboard message. This happened just before we landed. I had elected to stay at the airport until six, to then catch a taxi to the port instead of getting a hotel. It did not seem worth it. I had ideas of sleeping after my arrival in the airport, somewhere but it was too noisy. I gave up at four, and did the Wordle! I had a friendly taxi to the port and boarded the Anemos, same as last time. On board I managed to get a couple of hours sleep on what became a progressively windier voyage. I had arranged to briefly meet a friend when we berthed at Serifos, she had some home baking treats for us. At Sifnos, I met my friends and their lovely dog at the port, they told me the body of a local was on the ferry, the person had died in an accident a few days earlier and was being brought back for the funeral. As we walked to my apartment, the hearse drove off the ferry to the sound of car horns sounding and the ferry’s joining in. My apartment is part of a big house next to my friends house, it’s used as an office for one of them. At this point I gave a piece of saved spanakopita to their dog, who gave me a lovely welcome earlier.
The apartment has lovely views and after having lunch at my friends house, I went back to it to catch up on some sleep before returning for some dinner. In the evening, the wind even stronger, I walked back to the micro spiti for a lovely meal and watched a play with Andrew Scott as one of the players. Overnight the wind grew stronger I had left the shutters open, and when the wind woke me, I could see the mountain brooding outside almost menacing like.
In the morning sea is still a bit wild, we went to a few local shops and said hello and got Christmas gifts from many of them. We even bought a turkey, albeit a frozen one. In Apollonia I met the guy who rescued me from the beach, in his full ambulance uniform. A brief heavy shower had us scuttling into a local cafe. During the afternoon I walked over the beach to walk to the church at the end of a footpath called E Katerina. I got some nice photos and slow motion videos of the churning sea as it crashed onto the rocks.
In the evening we went to a taverna that I had been to before, with more friends and had a very enjoyable evening and I had this tasty dinner. Luckily my friends dog was welcome and he had a few titbits.
