On my recent walk back from Apollonia I spotted two fruit trees, in a front garden, a lemon and an orange one.
The photo is not very good, but you sort of get the idea. Today has been a shopping, walking and litter pick day. The taverna in Kamares that my friends thought of going to on New Year’s Eve is actually closed on that day, so we are going tonight. Tomorrow my friends plan a mixed grill; burgers sausages and lots of other treats to see the New Year in. We went to a butchers in Apollonia for the meat and a new supermarket that I have never been to before. My friends are really good at spreading their patronage among the various shops and tavernas on the island and I am sure it’s appreciated. Even in winter they have a good choice in Kamares, a baker, cafe, pottery shop, supermarket with its own butchers, a ferry ticket place and one taverna. In the summer months, there is a lot more open, like more cafes, tavernas and numerous tourist shops.

There is another shop I forgot to mention, in Kamares, it’s called Sifanto, run by one of their friends. They buy their wine from here, she sells lots of other things like island delicacies not just tourist stuff. She is also involved in animal welfare on the island. Here is her shop.

You can just about read the name of the shop, on the board, even though the letters are not exact copies of the Greek ones. After the shopping trip, I walked back to Kamares, it’s still cold but I soon warmed up. It was just so nice to see the blue sky for once, I am going to need that sun, I have some washing one of my friends is going to do for me. I have been trying to use what little Greek I know, the Greeks would just say “a bottle of ouzo” whereas I take the longer route and say “can I have a bottle of ouzo”. But so far my efforts have ended up with a cheese pie when I asked for a ham and cheese one, and a ticket to Piraeus when I only wanted to go to Serifos! Funny because the name for cheese is nothing like the one for ham and cheese, and Serifos is nothing like Piraeus! I just apologise for my small amount of Greek, that phrase is understood! When I walk to Kamares, a lot of the drivers wave or hoot their horns, like they used to on Serifos, two years ago.
When I got to Kamares I wasn’t done, I wanted to do a litter pick on the beach, which did not take too long, I had to go to the dumpsters twice though. The lady who runs Sifanto, where I bought two bottle of wine while waiting for my friends to pick me up, asked me if the dead goat was still there, it was so I will tell her. After the litter pick, I treated myself to three scoops of ice cream, the lady at the supermarket saw me with my coat off and asked if I felt cold? I didn’t as it turned out. Finally here is the pottery shop owners car, I think he has a Rolls Royce as well.
And one more photo, another pottery shop this time outside of Kamares, with a rusty motorbike that’s seen better days at the gate!
