I have been having trouble with my iPad charging and it could have been the cable or the iPad. But the local shops in the port don’t sell usb C cables. So what to do? Well you ask a local,, in my case a friend who has lived here for years. There is an unmarked shop out towards the lighthouse and the fish ponds that I ought to visit she suggested. So this morning, before I did my walk with that friend, I drove there. A friendly dog greeted me when I got out of the car, and I walked towards the building, which looked like a house. The back door as I had been informed had a door with a buzzer to press. After doing so the door opened and in I went. It’s an Alladin’s cave for DIY enthusiasts !

The owner asked me what I wanted and sure enough there were two or three examples of what would meet my need. Armed with one of these I drove back to the port. I then went into Grans to buy a baguette each for us for the walk. I had a long chat with their delivery rider who I know. I then drove up to Hora where I met my friend. Like me, after my accident she doesn’t like to walk alone on these deserted tracks. So it was a bonus to walk with her, but also on a new route that neither of us had been on before. It was a beautiful day, and I used some scissors and turned one pair of my old trousers into shorts!

Above is a nice poster I photographed while waiting for my friend to come down from her house. We then drove off into the mountains, and took a turn off the road just before the one you take to go to the Dog Palace. The track was quite bumpy and rugged shall we say, but my friend has a car suited to rough terrain. The views were spectacular. The mountains looked lush and green after nature has woken up after the rain. We could see the baby island they call Little Serifos and larger Kithnos in the distance. We parked quite close to what is probably the smallest church on the island, Roudani, with its white cross and external bell visible.

The path we were to take was a track, a suitable car could negotiate it, but that’s not the point. We knew we were in for an uphill slog on the way back though. Over in the distance and not too far away, we could see the radio tower that is near to the Dog Palace, and I also saw the church I walk the dogs too. It was so quiet. It wasn’t long before the beach we were heading too started to appear, it’s not easy to get to, but you could see a few buildings on the land behind it, that looked like active farms. As we went down, we got close enough to another farm, where a dog hearing or smelling us started barking, and did so on the way back.

The last bit before we reached the beach itself was quite steep, I think we both realised going back was going to be a bit hard to start with. The beach Karavas isn’t the most beautiful beach on the island but it’s quite nice. There was the usual amount of litter, but nothing we could do with it. We found a nice place to sit and had our lunch. Along the track was what looked like a water pipe, for the two houses? At least if it leaked you could probably find the source of the leak, as it wasn’t buried.
The sea was an amazing colour and we saw a little fishing boat, trying its luck around the coastline. Apart from the initial struggle up and away from the beach, the return wasn’t as bad as we feared and we soon got to my friends car. On the way we passed impressive rocks, many eroded by the sand and wind. We did about ten kilometres, not a huge distance but very enjoyable, good company and lunch! I said hello to the Hora cats as I walked back to my car.
