Oxford town

Myself and a friend visited another friend of ours, she isn’t having an easy time of it, so as she likes lemon meringue pie, I decided to make one for her. I followed the guidelines after chilling the pastry, I cooked the base and the sides shrunk by at least fifty percent! I tried to carry on but it was hopeless. So it went into the food waste in. Thankfully my friend also  likes Battenburg cake so I made one of those which turned out ok. I have been to the allotment, a couple of times and it’s still dry, no rain still so more watering needed. I sowed a few more seeds, I will need to keep those drills moist to have any chance of germination. Nothing has been eaten, the peas are now climbing up the supports I have put in. A bit more bindweed has appeared but nothing compared to what was there a year ago.

The rhubarb I have up there, it’s in a raised bed, and it’s bolted which means it’s under drought stress, I have another at home to move up to the allotment in a shady place soon. The old rhubarb will come out and I can use the raised bed for something else. But I got some rhubarb and made this rhubarb and almond cake as I did last year.

Over the Easter weekend, I went to Oxford where we used to live. I had never been to the Ashmolean museum, I don’t know why. So when I got there, I had a good look around. There is so much to see, all sorts of objects from the ages.

I love seeing musical instruments, the stringed ones were amazing to see.

This cabinet is actually a book case, not super old, but really beautiful.

The covered market, used to be full of shops selling flowers, fruit, meat and so on. At Christmas time it was really special. But a lot of that has gone, to be replaced by tourist shops. This cafe was interesting with loads of postits on the windows.

But it would be remiss not to share photos of some of the memorable sights of the city, like Carfax, where you can climb the tower and look over the city.

Old Tom tower, we have been inside the college years ago, it sends shivers down your spine when you are outside it when the bell tolls at night.

And finally my favourite Magdalen tower not far from the bridge where students jump into the river on May Day.

Oh there is always one more photo. The Bear pub, which inside has a huge collection of ties. There are in boxes on the wall and ceiling I think. It’s a real old fashioned pub.
